Black Sesame Garlic Tonkotsu Ramen

Shio Tonkotsu

Ramen has become world famous. While the NYC location of Ippudo has been dubbed the “must go” for ramen, I’ve discovered a place better, cheaper and with no wait. While St. Marks is known as NYC’s Little Tokyo, there exists another Japan town near Midtown East. Hide Chan exists here, a little right of Time Square and a little left of the United Nations Building. It happens to be a favorite of mine given the location and the taste. I’m able to meet my midtown working friends without sacrificing authenticity or flavor.

Everyone has their particulars about their favorite ramen and every ramen shop has a specialty. Hide Chan has your basic and delicious Tonkotsu (pork bone based) ramen. It’s hearty and filling with no skimping of toppings. The Garlic Sesame is popular, giving a bit of a kick to the rich meaty broth. While it may look a bit scary, the flavor is robust bringing together common elements of Asian cooking- pork, garlic, salt and sesame. The broth is flavorful and solid- this isn’t a delicate ramen broth. It’s kind’ve in your face.

Ramen has changed to suit the taste of the eater- Hide Chan has also changed with the times to provide clients with a choice- how oily/fatty do you want your broth? How would you like your noodles cooked? These simple detailes will make the perfect ramen combination.

If you’re wandering around Midtown not knowing what to eat- remember, walking uptown it’ s a little right of Time Square and a little left of te river. Lunch is usually crowded, but dinner is still delicious.
